Through a combination of lecture and discussion the course is an exploration of the history of world theatre from the Greeks to Shakespeare. Students learn about staging practices, the cultural use of theatrical space, the changing status of theatre within various cultures, and the role of the audience, the playwright, and the actor in theatrical performance.

Attendance and participation. In order to qualify to take the final exam, you must have maintained an adequate participation and attendance record and completed all course requirements. Absence hours will affect the In-class participation score. After 9 hours of absence you may not take the Final exam. Students who have not met the minimum performance and/or attendance requirements will not be able to take the final exam and will receive an FZ grade.
