POLS 612 ders içeriği
This course brings together concepts and perspectives from various fields of the human sciences such as sociology, psychoanalysis, anthropology and semiology. The focus will be on current analyses of how societies and cultures are formed and break down. Special attention will be paid to the problems and future of contemporary societies and cultures.
Haftalık konular (14 hafta)
- INTRODUCTION: This course is designed somewhat differently from most cultural studies courses. Focusing more on works in Critical Philosophy and Social Theory, it is more like an “underview” rather than an overview of Cultural Studies. And, seen from below, it would not be an exaggeration to say that what came to be called cultural studies in recent years essentially consists of critical analyses of cultural practices and representations. The ultimate aim of the course, therefore, can be summarized as understanding how these critical analyses are carried out.
- The Origins of Modern Social Theory and Cultural Studies - The Enlightenment, “Representation,” and Kant's Critical Method.
- The Concept of Ideology and its Vicissitudes.
- Nietzsche and genealogy of modern values and institutions.
- Linguistic Turn, Structuralism and Semiology.
- Moving beyond Structuralism? Bourdieu on Habitus, Capital, Social Space, Reflexivity and the Logic of Practice.
- New Problematizations of Modernity in the Twentieth Century: Adorno on Enlightenment, Rationalization and Culture Industry.
- Foucault on Discourse, Power and Knowledge.
- Panopticon and Biopower.
- Technologies and Practices of the Self
- New Directions? Actor-Network Theory
- Review
- Workshop: Presentations by seminar participants. The choice of topics and texts is necessarily limited by time and energy considerations. To alleviate this limitation, in the final part of the course, the participants will have a chance to present and discuss topics that are not covered in the course outline, focusing on works published in the last few years in the field of Cultural Studies.
