Haftalık konular (14 hafta)
- Introduction to the course This graduate course introduces students to the broad range of theoretical and empirical works in media and communication studies, with a sustained focus on what people – and organizations – do with media in everyday life. The first half of the course builds a foundation in the theoretical traditions of everyday life (Lefebvre, de Certeau, Goffman) and examines how mediated practices, self-presentation, audiences, and sharing ordinary experiences. Later the course moves to GenerativeAI practices and uses in everyday life. The second half turns to the contemporary politics of mediated everyday life, with three integrated weeks dedicated to: organizational communication and public relations theory; corporate social responsibility (CSR), ESG, and stakeholder communication; and brand/corporate activism. Students will learn to distinguish among major theoretical approaches, to operationalize them in empirical work, and to develop their own research questions and analyses.

- Organizational Communication and Public Relations Theory This week introduces students to the theoretical traditions that frame how organizations speak, listen, and act in public everyday. We examine constitutive perspectives on organizational communication (CCO), critical and cultural approaches to public relations, and the place of organizational voice in mediated everyday life. The week serves as a conceptual bridge between the theories of practice covered in the first half of the course and the CSR, ESG, and brand activism that follows. Core Readings: Mumby, D. - CSR, ESG, and Brand Activism This week examines how organizations communicate social and environmental responsibility as part of everyday public life. We look at the constitutive role of CSR talk, the gap between communication and practice, and the rise of ESG reporting as a stakeholder genre. Furthermore, this week considers what happens when corporations enter the field of advocacy themselves – taking public stances on contested social issues. We examine the line between authentic activism and “woke-washing,” and what brand activism means for consumers, employees, and publics. Core Readings: Verk, N., Golob, U., & Podnar, K. (2021).
